I was excited to smell Goose Creek's new spring candle scents. I was especially interested in smelling the new Sage and Citrus candle. I obviously know a little about citrus fruits, but sage? The only time I ever hear about sage is around Thanksgiving and Christmas when my sister makes the dressing for our family dinners. Not that I would have a clue, but apparently sage is an important ingredient in Thanksgiving and Christmas dressing.

As it turns out, sage is an interesting herb that is known by many different names: garden sage, culinary sage, true sage, and common sage to name a few. Sage is an evergreen plant that has numerous species and belongs in the same family as lavender, oregano, thyme, basil, and rosemary. It grows on a bush and belongs to the Lamiaceae family.

For those of you who are also in the dark about sage, here are 10 interesting facts about this hardy herb.

1. Sage has a woody stem that grows up to 2 feet in height.
2. It is a perennial plant which means it will grow back year after year.
3. Native Americans used the sage plant as a medicine to rub on gums. It was also used to treat rashes and other skin ailments.
4. Sage is used in China for many medicinal purposes. It is thought to increase body strength and heat, and also increase mental capacity.
5. The juice from fresh sage leaves can be applied to insect bites to remove the sting or burn.
6. Roman citizens used sage for a variety of treatments. They believed it would help a sore throat, bleeding wounds, snake bites, hot flashes, and ulcers.
7. Because of its antibacterial properties, the Greeks and Romans used sage to help preserve their meat.
8. The sage plant will develop flowers in many colors such as white, purple, pink, and lavender.
9. Sage has been used to flavor dishes for over 2,000 years. Because it has a peppery taste, it is used in many culinary dishes.
10. Sage has recently become popular in the medical field because scientists have found that it has the potential to help treat Alzheimer's patients.

Goose Creek's Sage and Citrus candle combines an aromatic base of patchouli, powder, and musk with a middle layer of lavender and geranium.
